Major Roadwork & Construction Projects
  • Please be advised that overnight closures of Front Street between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. will remain ongoing until mid-June for crews to complete bridge deck construction and install deck panels and overhang decks for the new multi-use pathways above Front Street.

Over the coming months, some overnight closures of Front Street and Columbia Street will be required to complete additional construction activities (see attached notice for more information).

Front Street and Columbia Street will not be closed at the same time. Front Street Mews will remain open and access to businesses in downtown New Westminster will be maintained at all times.

  • Roadwork to begin at Brunette Avenue and Sherbrooke Street

    Project information

As part of the Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment project, the intersection at Brunette Avenue and Sherbrooke Street is being widened to allow large trucks to use this route for hospital deliveries.

This work supports the City's plans to turn East Columbia Street into a 'Great Street' with wider sidewalks, narrower intersections, and restrictions on large trucks.

    Traffic Impacts

Construction will begin April 7th and is expected to continue through September 2025.

Permitted work hours on Brunette Avenue:
    Monday to Saturday: 9am - 3pm

    • Vehicle traffic must use East Columbia Street for access to Sherbrooke Street.
    • Exit from Sherbrooke Street onto East Columbia Street, not Brunette Avenue.
    • Parking along Sherbrooke Street between Wilson Street and Brunette Avenue will be impacted throughout the project.
    • Traffic control personnel will guide vehicles at driveways along Sherbrooke Street, vehicles turning from Rousseau Street onto Brunette Avenue, as well as vehicles turning to and from East Columbia Street.
    • The sidewalks on Sherbrooke Street near the work area will be closed.
    • There will be a temporary pedestrian ramp on Brunette Avenue.
    • Cyclists should avoid the area and use the East Columbia Street bike lanes instead.

  • Project Details

Please be advised that the City of New Westminster’s contractor, GPM CIVIL CONTRACTING, is scheduled to commence the Uptown Plaza and Sixth St Public Realm Works. The primary extents of the project are on Sixth Street, from Sixth Avenue to Belmont Street, and Belmont Plaza (located on Belmont Street between Sixth Street and midblock to Seventh Street). It will also include improvements to the west side of Sixth Street between Princess Street and Sixth Avenue.

    Pedestrian sidewalk detour

A temporary sidewalk detour is in place for pedestrians heading southbound on Sixth Street. This detour will remain in effect until approximately September.

The sidewalk closure is necessary to support underground utility upgrades at the intersection of Sixth Street and Belmont Street, where multiple services—such as gas, water, sewer, and electrical—are being upgraded. The work involves large equipment and ongoing vehicle activity in a limited space.

To ensure a safe route for pedestrians, a clearly marked detour has been provided around Belmont Plaza. Additional signage and surface improvements are in place to guide pedestrians through the area.

An alternate option for southbound pedestrians is to use Sixth Street East and reconnect with Sixth Street West using the newly installed temporary crosswalk past Belmont Street.

Thank you for your understanding as we complete these important public space upgrades.

    Project Timeline

    February 17th through September 2025

    Hours of Work
    Monday - Friday: 7am-8pm
    Saturday: 9am-6pm

    Traffic Impacts

    1. Southbound curb lane and travel lane are closed on Sixth St between Sixth Ave and Belmont St. Traffic is shifted over the center line to accommodate two-way traffic.
    2. On street parking on Sixth St between Sixth Ave and Belmont St is removed to accommodate travel lanes.
    3. A portion of westside sidewalk on Sixth St between Sixth Ave and Belmont St is occupied by contractor  to facilitate the construction. Minimum 1.8m sidewalk will be maintained open for pedestrian access.
    4. Southbound bus stop at the Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue intersection (Stop ID 52420) will be relocated to the Sixth Street and Princess Street intersection to accommodate construction
    5. The interim Uptown Plaza will remain closed during construction.
    6. Access to businesses and residents will be maintained.

We will endeavor to minimize disruption as much as possible to businesses and residents. However, as with a project of this nature, please expect some additional noise and dust during construction. If special consideration is required, please contact the City’s project manager.

  • Project details:

The Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment project aims to implement several aspects of the Columbia Street Great Street vision. The drawings below show how road space has been reallocated to widen sidewalks, enhancing the pedestrian corridor. Additionally, they feature separated bike lanes, improved bus stops, new trees, street lighting and landscaping. There are also intersection and signal improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles at East Columbia and Keary Street, Hospital Street, and Sherbrooke Street.

Sherbrooke Street improvements have also reallocated road space to widen sidewalks, enhancing the pedestrian corridor. Additionally, the Central Valley Greenway connections are enhanced with separated bike lanes, new trees, street lighting and landscaping. There are also intersection improvements for traffic calming, pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles along Sherbrooke Street at Kelly Street, Fader Street and the local lanes.
